Symphonies Nos. 5 & 8
Mention the name Beethoven, and the word symphony immediately springs to mind. Justly so, for if there is one standard by which romantic orchestral music is judged, it is the nine-part symphonic oeuvre of this Viennese German. Thanks to the successful manner in which the composer moulds both form and content to his will, this overwhelming Symphony No.5 (1808) has become an unapproachable status symbol. As far as the technical form is concerned, the Symphony No.5 is a powerful response to the Classical tradition. In his Symphony No.8 (1814) too, Beethoven links his (humorous) power of imagination to a sophisticated knowledge of the form.
